OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
Diagnose faults on mechanical and electrical systems and perform breakdown repairs and servicing of heavy mining equipment. Train and coach Tanzanian nationals on the job to ensure effective skills transfer in line with set development plans. Establish and execute technical development plans for key national mechanics to improve competency within the department.
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Maintain strong awareness and management of safety, health, and environmental aspects in the workplace and commit full capability to assigned work.
- Act as both technical specialist and trainer/coach to ensure effective transfer of skills and knowledge to junior national mechanics according to development plans.
- Advise the Superintendent of any conditions that could create obstacles or opportunities for the managerial team or company.
- Demonstrate work behaviors consistent with company values and within prescribed boundaries, policies, standards, procedures, and legislation.
- Disclose timely information to the manager when accountabilities cannot be met within time limits or can be met with fewer resources.
- Prepare repair reports with photos of each major failure and ensure proper documentation.
- Support the team to comply with work schedules while attending to emerging work efficiently to optimize equipment availability and reliability.
- Support the workforce to work safely by identifying and managing workplace hazards associated with the tasks being performed.
- Provide expert advice to underground maintenance supervisors and trades personnel engaged in maintenance of the mining fleets as directed by the superintendents.
- Develop the scope of underground work for major works associated with the underground mining fleet.
- Ensure work is performed to OEM requirements and that best fitment and installation practices are adhered to and imparted to the workforce.
- Monitor underground maintenance skill levels, provide on-the-job training as necessary, maintain a training register for underground maintainers, and ensure the workforce can work without supervision.
- Continually check work in progress by monitoring quality and conducting daily inspections.
- Perform diagnostic electrical tests as needed and conduct fault finding and repairs on remote systems underground.
- Assist teams in developing work packages and procedures so accurate work packages are established for future work.
- Work with planners to ensure spares and materials are optimized under the VMI contract with MANTRAC and SANDVIK.
- Identify work to be raised through the maintenance system into each equipment’s backlog for upcoming services.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Education & Qualification
- Relevant trade test.
- Preferred trainer/coach qualification (certification or diploma).
Experience
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in heavy mining underground equipment maintenance and repair.
Knowledge & Skills
- Previous experience in a similar role or time spent working on mechanical components on the equipment.
- Principles and techniques for working with groups and fostering effective team interaction.
- Implementation, evaluation, and work standards.
- Extensive experience with the maintenance of Sandvik and Caterpillar underground mining equipment.
- Expert knowledge and experience with the tools and equipment used in the maintenance of the GGM underground mining fleet.
- Knowledge of equipment inspection and routine servicing procedures to be used at GGM.
- Expert knowledge in planning and execution of major maintenance for the underground mining fleet including undercarriage and major component replacement project work.
- Extensive knowledge of record keeping.
- Ability to operate required tools and equipment in a safe and accountable manner.
