UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, Innovation

An embedded system is a microprocessor-based computer hardware system with software that is designed to perform a dedicated function, either as an independent system or as a part of a large system. At the core is an integrated circuit designed to carry out computation for real-time operations.

These operations might be information about services such as functionality of water pumps, teacher and student attendance, complaint and suggestion boxes. UNICEF realizes the potential embedded systems might have in the future of programme implementations and therefore wishes to explore potential use cases in Tanzania.

How can you make a difference?

The purpose of the present assignment is to build, install and troubleshoot two prototype embedded systems for:

  1. Real time monitoring of Free Residual Chlorine (FRC) and pH levels in water supply systems in Zanzibar.
  2. Youth engagement content dissemination in schools using FM radio frequency and Wi-Fi connectivity

Regarding the Real Time Monitoring of FRC and pH levels, the system has been mapped as part of a previous internship programme that ran from March to September 2022. The requirements have been identified and prototype data visualization is built. At this point, to finalize this cycle of the initiative, it is required that the physical devices are assembled and installed in a real-life setting. Furthermore, close monitoring and troubleshooting are required to ensure that we collect sufficient information to inform a potential scale-up exercise and a future product iteration.

The Educational content dissemination in schools will be a new prototype product to be designed and assembled. The high-level requirement for the new prototype is that it needs to be remotely controlled, able to disseminate information via Wi-Fi, broadcast radio programmes at set times and be solar powered. While the ideation of the product is complete, a user centric research is required, and the detailed requirement documentation needs to be created. Given the remote placement of the devices a monitoring dashboard is required to be built to remotely monitor functionality of the devices. Once devices are assembled and monitoring dashboard is ready, devices deployment is expected in 5 sites.
