Justdiggit (www.justdiggit.org) is a fast-growing non-profit organization working on landscape restoration in Africa.
The organization is seeking a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) officer to help design and implement MEL frameworks and plans for its new programmes, learn from MEL data, and test and roll out innovative MEL tools and methods.
Position summary
Are you passionate about environmental restoration, data and creating measurable impact? Justdiggit is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Young Professional to join its Tanzania team.
This is an exciting early-career opportunity for a recent graduate or emerging professional who wants to gain practical experience in monitoring, evaluation and learning within an international environmental organization.
Working alongside experienced colleagues, the successful candidate will support programme monitoring, data collection, reporting and learning while contributing to landscape restoration initiatives across Northern and Central Tanzania.
Through structured mentorship, coaching and hands-on field experience, the successful candidate will build valuable technical and professional skills while helping communities restore degraded landscapes.
Key responsibilities
1. Field monitoring, planning and data collection
- Participate in field monitoring visits alongside colleagues, partners and local communities.
- Assist with monitoring restoration interventions and learning about approaches such as Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), rainwater harvesting and rangeland restoration.
- Support the collection, verification and management of programme monitoring data.
- Support the monitoring of key ecological indicators, including:
- Vegetation cover
- Regeneration
- Biomass
- Soil and water conditions
- Land productivity
- Assist in conducting baseline assessments, periodic evaluations, field surveys and context analyses.
- Support the use of basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial tools for mapping restoration plots and monitoring activities.
- Support the planning of anticipated field-level MEL activities.
2. Data management, quality assurance and reporting
- Assist with routine data-quality checks and digital data collection using standard MEL tools.
- Help compile and organize data for reports, learning products and programme evaluations.
- Support the maintenance of MEL databases and documentation.
- Assist in collecting and reviewing data from partners to ensure the timely submission of donor reports.
- Contribute to report writing.
3. Capacity building and learning
- Participate in partner training, learning sessions and knowledge-sharing activities.
- Contribute to documenting lessons learned, best practices and success stories.
- Participate in learning and reflection sessions to review restoration progress and identify improvements.
- Promote good MEL practices among implementing partners and field teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields:
- Monitoring and Evaluation
- Forestry
- Natural Resource Management
- Environmental Science
- Agriculture
- Ecology
- Rangeland Management
- Geography
- Development Studies
- A related field
- A master’s degree is an advantage but is not required.
Experience
- Recent graduate or candidate with up to two years of relevant experience.
- Internship, volunteer or research experience in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, environmental conservation, community development or a related field is an advantage.
Knowledge and skills
- Good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, with strong working knowledge of Excel.
- Basic knowledge or understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Familiarity with digital data-collection tools such as KoboToolbox or ODK is an advantage.
- Basic understanding of data-analysis software such as R, Python or SPSS is desirable but not essential.
- Understanding of Monitoring and Evaluation concepts is an advantage.
- Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multicultural teams.
- Willingness to travel regularly to remote field locations.
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
