Purpose of the position
The Field Officer will support the monitoring and development of seaweed cultivation activities across Tanzania’s coastal regions.
The role will also contribute to marine biodiversity monitoring, sustainable use of marine resources, seaweed species identification, farmer engagement and community-based marine conservation activities.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working extensively in coastal villages and marine field environments. They must also be able to integrate effectively with local communities, seaweed farmers and other stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
The Field Officer will:
- Monitor seaweed cultivation activities across assigned coastal locations.
- Conduct field assessments of seaweed farms, cultivation sites and surrounding marine environments.
- Support the identification of seaweed species and other relevant marine flora and fauna encountered during fieldwork.
- Develop and maintain practical knowledge of seaweed species found in Tanzania’s coastal and wild marine habitats.
- Monitor seaweed growth, health, environmental conditions and potential cultivation challenges.
- Identify and report factors affecting seaweed productivity, including environmental, biological and farming-related factors.
- Support the assessment and monitoring of marine biodiversity within and around cultivation areas.
- Contribute to activities involving marine ecosystem preservation, restoration and the sustainable use of marine resources.
- Work directly with seaweed farmers and coastal communities to support improved cultivation practices.
- Collect, record and report reliable field data from different coastal locations.
- Support field trials, surveys and research and development activities related to seaweed cultivation and marine resources.
- Prepare field reports and communicate observations, challenges and recommendations to the technical and research and development team.
- Be willing and able to relocate temporarily or permanently to different coastal communities, depending on operational requirements.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants must have:
- A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Fisheries, Aquaculture, Environmental Science or a closely related discipline.
- A practical understanding of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
- A demonstrated interest or experience in seaweed cultivation, marine fieldwork, fisheries, aquaculture or coastal resource management. This is highly desirable.
Required personal and practical attributes
The successful candidate should have:
- The ability and willingness to work and live in rural or coastal village environments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to integrate respectfully with local communities and work effectively with farmers.
- A willingness to travel extensively and work in different coastal locations.
- The physical capability to undertake marine and field activities.
- The ability to collect, record and interpret field observations accurately.
Added advantages
The following will be considered added advantages:
- Swimming proficiency.
- Diving or snorkelling experience or relevant certification.
- Experience in seaweed farming or seaweed species identification.
- GIS, GPS and basic field-mapping skills.
- Experience conducting marine biodiversity surveys or environmental monitoring.
- Knowledge of Tanzanian coastal ecosystems.
