Job Description

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Deputy Programme Director (Deputy Team Leader) for an upcoming civil society activity.

This position will be based in Tanzania and is contingent upon award.

Role overview: The Deputy Programme Director will be responsible for the strong, results-driven management of the core team and components 1 and 2 and will be responsible for ensuring all staff meet performance expectations. They will be responsible to ensure that Wajibika activities incorporate cross-cutting themes of inclusion, politically smart, and evidence based. Working alongside the Team Leader, they will be required to take quick and resolute steps to resolve any underperformance issues.

Person specification

The DPD must demonstrate relevant expertise in:
(1) leading the design and implementation of successful civil society and accountability programmes resulting in tangible changes, in Tanzania or similar contexts;
(2) NGO/CSO grant management experience;
(3) inclusive and effective management of large teams from a diverse group of backgrounds;
(4) influencing and communicating with senior political and public leaders;
(5) ensuring a nurturing and empowering work environment that enables all staff to perform at their full potential;
(6) understanding and interpreting the FCDO and the wider UK Government’s latest political and policy requirements and working proactively with FCDO staff to ensure ODA programmes make a substantial and visible contribution
Have or proven experience necessary to build strong, senior level relationships with civil society and government in Tanzania and be seen as a respected and fair broker amongst activists and leaders.
The DPD must demonstrate internationally competitive senior expertise in the leadership, management, strategy development and delivery of civil society and governance programmes, complemented by outstanding demonstration of expert communication skills, critical thinking, thinking and working politically, and results delivery including of adaptive programming.
Knowledge and experience working either in Tanzania or East Africa is sought and some basic Kiswahili is also desirable.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or comparable level of professional experience in public administration, international development, or related field; Master’s preferred.
Minimum10 years of related experience in increasingly senior roles; at least 3 years leading large and complex programmes at a senior level working in a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
